As bakers/cake artists we wear so many hats especially as start-ups. We are the CEO, Customer service rep, decorator and even the cleaner in most cases. It gets overwhelming too when you have to balance all these with having a family and other areas of our lives. Most times one area or more suffers most likely the business and it becomes even more difficult to grow and scale the business.
This was my story for a few years after I started by business, till I became more intentional about striking a balance and equipping myself with all the knowledge I needed to successfully grow and expand my business. I started out unsure of what I really wanted from decorating cakes. It was a hobby, a distraction before I got my "real" job. The passion grew over the years and became a full fledged business but not without many lows and a few highs at the beginning. I lost count of the number of times I quit on it mentally till I found my footings.
With almost a decade years of experience, I decided to write about my journey among other interesting topics that can help you START, GROW and SCALE a cake decorating business successfully. I am Abibat Adedoyin Creative Director Habeebah cakes and confectionery, a bake studio located in Osun State, Nigeria. I am the chief instructor at the Habeebah cakes online academy where we teach new and intermediate bakers different cake decorating techniques. I also have a 9 to 5 job where I lecture in a Polytechnic. A wife, mum to 2 adorable kids and I'm most passionate about helping people transform and gain clarity in their business.
My book "THE CAKEPRENEUR" details my journey of how I grew from zero to a six figure business. I shared in this book most of the challenges I had faced, from almost loosing my business several years ago due to poor pricing and lack of proper business knowledge, to transitioning from a home bakery to a store front and dealing with low to no sales for the first 6 months, to dealing with numerous staffing and customer issues to mention a few. I also shared about dealing with Fear, procrastination and imposter syndrome that almost crippled my person till I became aware of it and started dealing with it.
Also, detailed in this book are some of my wins, like how I built my business from ground up to becoming a household name in my environment today and also how I started my online academy that has grossed millions in revenue and help transformed the lives of our students across different countries in the world. The knowledge of this remains humbling for me.
In this book I interviewed seasoned bakers/cake artists like Enrique Rojas (Have Some Cakes UK), Ezinne Okonkwo (Dewdrops cakes,Nigeria), Lolade Ogunjimi (Dainty Affairs, Nigeria), Zoya Umran (cakesbyZoya, UAE), Ndirika Udoyeh (Bakers option, Nigeria), Ruthnie Frank Briggs (Rutinies delight, Nigeria) and Nkiru Okoye (House of mascot) across different topics like- balancing running a 9 to 5 and business, Carving a niche in business, Branding, Running a business in diaspora to mention a few.
